I’m working my way through the collection, though I’ll be tossing in other books to mix it up as well. The series covers fascinating chunks of history in Canada from 1666 to 1948 in locations coast to coast. I’ve been meaning to learn more about the history of my own country, but I like learning in a fun way and when I come across interesting facts then I’ll do a little more background research. They really don’t sugar coat anything in these books and while many terrible things happen in them, it still feels real and accessible and there are important pieces of Canadian history in this series that people might not be aware of. Their target age group is about 12, but good writing doesn’t have an age limit on it, especially when they’re covering topics such as political tension, loss of friends and family through death and/or separation, war, invasions, medical disasters, etc. They’re a well written collection of 36 books designed to get young people engaged in history. I’ve recently purchased most of the Dear Canada books and am on the hunt for the few remaining. They know only that her name is Anna.Īs Maisie’s search for the killer escalates, the country braces for what is to come. The little girl billeted at Maisie’s home in Kent does not, or cannot, speak, and the authorities do not know who the child belongs to or who might have put her on the “Operation Pied Piper” evacuee train. And as Maisie delves deeper into the killings of the dispossessed from the “last war," a new kind of refugee - an evacuee from London - appears in Maisie's life. In a London shadowed by barrage balloons, bomb shelters and the threat of invasion, within days another former Belgian refugee is found murdered. Francesca Thomas has an urgent assignment for Maisie: to find the killer of a man who escaped occupied Belgium as a boy, some twenty-three years earlier during the Great War. At the moment Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain broadcasts to the nation Britain’s declaration of war with Germany, a senior Secret Service agent breaks into Maisie Dobbs' flat to await her return. After a thousand miles of solitude, she found a man who helped her learn to love and trust again-and heal. On the trail and on her own, she found that survival is predicated on persistent self-reliance. Exhausted after each thirty-mile day, at times on the verge of starvation, Aspen was forced to confront her numbness, coming to terms with the sexual assault and her parents' disappointing reaction. A nineteen-year-old girl alone and lost, she conquered desolate mountain passes and met rattlesnakes, bears, and fellow desert pilgrims. In this inspiring memoir, Aspen chronicles her journey, a five-month trek that was ambitious, dangerous, and transformative. Her desperation growing, she made a bold decision: She would seek healing in the freedom of the wild, on the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail leading from Mexico to Canada. Dealing with a problem that has sadly become all too common on college campuses around the country, she stumbled through her first semester-a challenging time made even harder by the coldness of her college's "conflict mediation" process. Overprotected by her parents who discouraged her from telling of the attack, Aspen was confused and ashamed. On her second night of college, Aspen was raped by a fellow student. Girl in the Woods is Aspen Matis's exhilarating true-life adventure of hiking from Mexico to Canada-a coming of age story, a survival story, and a triumphant story of overcoming emotional devastation. That said, it still took something incredible to be lauded as a pioneer. With the birth of aviation, everything was a challenge. Being the first to do something can’t be taken away. It is still an amazing effort to fly solo around Australia or fly to England in a Tiger Moth but, because of the airliners passing thousands of feet overhead, the mainstream don’t get it. Really, not a lot has changed since the early days of aviation. Destinations have to be carefully picked and diversions assessed for their suitability and safety. This is especially so when trying to follow the flight path of a pioneer. If anything, today’s political and security landscape makes long-distance solo flights harder to plan let alone fly. These flights remain remarkable achievements. Some do it in modern aircraft, some do it in vintage aircraft with or without a support crew. Long distance flying is accepted if you want to see the world yet pilots of all ages still accept the challenge to tackle a route solo. Aircraft cross six of the seven continents hourly and usually do so to reach another continent on the other side of a vast ocean. Aviation today doesn’t often make the headlines unless it’s bad news. Now, after decades of festering in a forgotten sub-basement, the specimen has found its way out and is on a lethal feeding frenzy. When Pentagon bioterror operative Roberto Diaz was sent to investigate a suspected biochemical attack, he found something far worse: a highly mutative organism capable of extinction-level destruction. It’s presented as a “conversation,” of which we hear only the voice of protagonist Changez, speaking to the unnamed American stranger he encounters in a café in the former’s native city of Lahore. A young Muslim’s American experience raises his consciousness and shapes his future in this terse, disturbing successor to the London-based Pakistani author’s first novel, Moth Smoke (2000). And that's just in July!įrom the decadent palaces of ancient Rome to the modern Halls of Congress, this illuminating (sometimes disturbing) narrative features an almost endless array of misbehavior, amusing mishaps, and breathtaking misfortune over the ages and across the historical spectrum. Here you will find a politically smeared George Washington, a cranky Colonel Sanders, a homicidal Saint Olga of Kiev, a cuckolded Napoleon, a flame-censored Steinbeck, a treacherous Douglas MacArthur, a weeping Einstein, an exasperated Charles Dickens, a humiliated King Henry II, and a faux-contrite Ted Kennedy. In this delightful sequel to his sleeper hit Bad Days in History, best-selling author Michael Farquhar delivers another eye-popping collection of unhappy days starring some of history's most famous, infamous and, unfortunate personalities caught up in a rich assortment of wretched episodes.
